The Adirondack Climate Outreach and Resilience Network (ACORN), of which the Adirondack Research Consortium is a founding member along with Paul Smith’s College and The Wild Center, conducted regional community climate resilience listening sessions in 2024-25. The findings identified a critical need for:

  • increased statewide visibility of Adirondack community climate resilience workforce needs, including generally increasing the awareness of the challenge of being a large rural region;

  • developing business, economic, and community sustainability, and human services support related to both the aging population, as well as to attract younger age groups and families;

  • multidisciplinary climate-ready workforce development pathways in Adirondack-specific sectors like: Forestry, Agriculture, Hospitality, Outdoor Recreation, Renewable Energy, Construction, Environmental Management, Health Care, Water Systems, Community Planning, and Education.

This interactive roundtable event on Oct 23, 2025 at SUNY Adirondack will bring together educational institutions, state agencies, economic development organizations, businesses, nonprofits, and area students to increase awareness of Adirondack climate resilience workforce needs. The event will include speakers, panels, several facilitated roundtable discussions related to building a climate-ready workforce pathway with diverse partners, and ample time scheduled for networking and tabling during the event.

The roundtable is organized in partnership by the Adirondack Research Consortium, The Wild Center, and Paul Smith’s College with support from the Adirondack Community Foundation.
